In his first post-election “Weekend Update” segment, co-anchor Michael Che of Saturday Night Live didn’t hold back as he processed Donald Trump’s victory. Grabbing a glass of what appeared to be liquor, Che lamented, “How did I let y’all convince me that rural Pennsylvania would pick the Jamaican Indian lady?” Clearly feeling the weight of the election results, Che jokingly blamed his time spent around white liberals for his misplaced optimism.

His comedic partner, Colin Jost, joined in on the jabs at the president-elect, poking fun at Trump’s promise of a golden age for America and comparing Vice President-elect JD Vance’s religious journey to his own past as an altar boy. However, it was Che who delivered the most provocative lines of the night by referencing R&B star R. Kelly, a convicted sexual abuser.

“Y’all gonna let a man with 34 felonies lead the free world and be the president of the United States? That’s it, I’m listening to R. Kelly again,” Che quipped, using his drink as a prop. “I already do, but I’m gonna stop pretending I don’t. If white people can elect their felon, I can dance to mine.”

Che didn’t shy away from addressing Trump’s appeal to working class voters, highlighting how the 10 wealthiest people on Earth saw a significant increase in their wealth following the election. “Yup, the richest people immediately got richer. But don’t worry, I’m sure yours is coming soon, Earl!” Che humorously reassured.

The segment was a mix of political commentary and sharp humor, showcasing Che’s ability to tackle sensitive topics with wit and satire. As the dust settles on the election, it’s clear that Che and Jost are ready to keep viewers entertained with their unique blend of comedy and social commentary.
