The San Francisco 49ers’ 2024 season came to a disappointing end after a series of setbacks, including postseason heartbreak, offseason drama, injuries, and personal tragedies. Head coach Kyle Shanahan bore the brunt of the team’s failings, as they fell short of expectations and missed the playoffs.

In a crucial game against the Los Angeles Rams, the 49ers’ offense struggled to score touchdowns, special teams were sloppy, and veteran linebacker De’Vondre Campbell Sr. made headlines for refusing to enter the game when called upon. Shanahan took responsibility for the team’s poor performance, acknowledging that they were simply not good enough.

The defeat marked the end of a six-season stretch filled with highs and lows for the 49ers, including Super Bowl losses and NFC Championship Game heartbreaks. The team that once seemed indomitable now faced an uncertain future, with key players like Charvarius Ward unsure of their return for the next season.

Despite the challenges, Ward remained optimistic about the team’s potential for the future, emphasizing the need to regroup and refocus in the offseason. As the 49ers look ahead to 2025, Shanahan must confront the team’s shortcomings and work with general manager John Lynch to rebuild a competitive roster.

While the 49ers technically still had a chance at making the playoffs, Shanahan acknowledged that their championship aspirations were effectively over. The team would need a series of unlikely outcomes to secure a postseason berth, but the focus was on playing better football and challenging the character of the team moving forward.

The defeat to the Rams highlighted the stark contrast between Shanahan’s struggling 49ers and Sean McVay’s resurgent Rams. McVay, a former assistant of Shanahan’s, had successfully reshaped the Rams into contenders after a rough season in 2022. In contrast, Shanahan faced questions about his leadership and the team’s ability to compete at a high level.

As the season came to a close, Shanahan reflected on the missed opportunities and the challenges that lay ahead. The 49ers’ disappointing campaign served as a stark reminder that they were not good enough in 2024, and Shanahan would need to make significant changes to ensure a more successful future for the team.
