On Friday evening, a 16-year-old boy was shot in Rogers Park, adding to the recent string of violence in the neighborhood. The incident took place in an alley in the 1600 block of West Juneway Terrace, where the victim was struck in the torso, knee, and hip by about seven gunshots. Despite his injuries, the boy managed to run into a nearby building for safety and was later reported to be in serious condition by the Chicago Police Department.
This shooting marks the sixth incident of gun violence in Rogers Park since Labor Day, a stark contrast to the peaceful summer the neighborhood had enjoyed prior. Following a fatal shooting on June 25 in the 1600 block of West Howard, the area had remained relatively quiet until early September when the first of a series of shootings occurred. The recent surge in violence includes another shooting on September 3, a fatal shooting on September 5, and a critical injury incident near Morse and Greenview last Sunday.
Despite the recent uptick in shootings, the overall number of incidents in Rogers Park this year is lower compared to previous years. With a total of 21 people shot so far, the neighborhood has seen a decrease from 29 at this point last year and 24 during the same period in 2022. By October 11, 2021, there were 18 reported shooting incidents in Rogers Park.
