A police investigation is underway following an incident where an Otago rugby league player was punched in the face, resulting in a suspected fractured eye socket.

Otago Whalers prop Mika Mafi was the victim of a punch by Counties-Manukau player Tahi Baggaley during a game at Forsyth Barr Stadium. The incident occurred 30 minutes into the match, leading to Baggaley being red-carded.

Although Mafi does not require surgery, he is currently recovering at home from the injury. Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond confirmed that a complaint had been made to the police, and the matter is being investigated.

The game was televised on Sky, capturing the incident on camera. The possibility of charges being pressed depends on the findings of the investigation and witness statements.

Typically, on-field sports incidents are handled internally by the respective sporting bodies, rather than through legal channels. Both New Zealand Rugby League and the Counties-Manukau Stingrays declined to comment when contacted.

Whalers coach David Reedy expressed concern that Mafi may have suffered a fractured eye socket, although surgery is not required. Mafi, who was taken to the hospital after the game, is currently recovering at home.

Southern zone general manager Liam Turner emphasized that such behavior is not tolerated in the sport and expressed disappointment over the incident.
