Two suspects accused of murdering former “General Hospital” actor Johnny Wactor have pleaded not guilty in a Los Angeles court. Robert Barceleau and Sergio Estrada, both aged 18, entered their pleas through their attorneys to charges of murder, grand theft, and attempted robbery. Another defendant, Frank Olano, aged 22, also pleaded not guilty to being an accessory after the fact. A fourth suspect, Leonel Gutierrez, is expected to enter a plea next month on charges of grand theft and attempted robbery.
Wactor was tragically shot and killed when he caught three thieves in the act of stealing the catalytic converter from his car on May 25. The 37-year-old had just finished work at a downtown LA rooftop bar and was with a coworker when he discovered the thieves. Without any provocation, one of the thieves fired at Wactor, resulting in his death.
Following an extensive investigation that involved seeking assistance from the public, the four suspects were arrested on August 15 and formally charged on August 19. Barceleau faces special circumstances charges, including murder during an attempted robbery and personal use of a firearm, which could lead to a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole upon conviction. Estrada faces charges that carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.
The LAPD released images of the suspects involved in Wactor’s killing, leading to the arrests and charges. Micah Parker, known for his work on “Vampire Diaries,” and an organizer of the Justice for Johnny Wactor movement, expressed support for Wactor’s family during a news conference outside Los Angeles City Hall on August 13.
The case has garnered significant attention due to Wactor’s connection to the entertainment industry and the tragic circumstances surrounding his death. The defendants’ attorneys have not yet commented on the case. As the legal proceedings continue, the community and Wactor’s loved ones seek justice for his untimely passing.
