An investigation is underway following a tragic fire in Queens over the weekend that claimed the lives of two individuals suspected of squatting in a garage. The victims, identified as Edward Daniel Jacobs, 35, and an unidentified woman, perished in the blaze that occurred on 91st Avenue near 175th Street in Jamaica.

Authorities are now treating the deaths as homicides, with suspicions pointing to arson as the cause of the fatal fire. The incident, which took place around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the victims’ presence in the detached structure.

According to reports, the garage where the fire broke out was filled with heavy clutter, indicating that it may have been used as a makeshift living space by the victims. The absence of a lock on the front door of the residence also suggests a lack of security measures in place.

Neighbors and residents in the area have shared accounts of suspicious activities taking place in and around the garage. Fahim Shawon, a student living in the building, mentioned observing individuals frequenting the garage and engaging in concerning behavior. He recalled encounters with people on the stairs leading to his apartment, noting the presence of drug paraphernalia and other illicit activities.

The unsettling circumstances surrounding the fire have prompted law enforcement to delve deeper into the case, exploring the possibility of foul play and deliberate arson. The tragic loss of life in such a manner has cast a shadow over the neighborhood, leaving residents shocked and saddened by the events that unfolded.
