Google Find My Device App to Introduce Compass Feature for Enhanced Tracking

As someone who frequently misplaces items, I rely on Tile trackers to locate my essential belongings. From keys to wallets and bags, these trackers help me find misplaced items with their Bluetooth technology. However, there are limitations to Bluetooth tracking, leading to a more basic “hot or cold” range finder. Fortunately, Google’s Find My Device app is set to receive an upgrade that will revolutionize tracking capabilities.

According to a recent APK teardown reported by 9to5Google, the Google Find My Device app is working on integrating a new feature called “Compass.” This feature is expected to leverage ultra-wideband (UWB) technology found in the latest devices. While competitors like Apple’s AirTags and Samsung’s SmartTags already utilize UWB tech, Google’s current system lacks this functionality.

Despite the absence of UWB integration in Google’s app, newer devices compatible with Google Find My Device, such as the Moto Tag tracker, come equipped with UWB capabilities. UWB technology enables trackers to employ advanced radio frequency techniques for precise location tracking, offering directional information relative to a connected device like a phone or tablet.

The potential introduction of a compass-style interface in the app signifies a significant improvement in tracking accuracy, allowing users to pinpoint the exact direction of a lost item. However, it is essential to note that the presence of code referencing a feature in an app teardown does not guarantee its implementation in future updates. Nevertheless, users can anticipate enhanced tracking capabilities in the upcoming updates of the Google Find My Device app.
