Gunman and Getaway Car Involved in Hamlin Park Shooting
Chicago police have released two images from video footage showing a gunman and getaway car involved in a shooting at Hamlin Park earlier this month. The incident occurred near the park’s basketball courts, where a 15-year-old boy was shot at 2:19 p.m. on October 4. According to sources, the shooting was linked to escalating tensions between the Maniac Latin Disciples and Insane Deuces street gangs.
Following the shooting, officials increased security at nearby Alcott High School, suspecting that some students may have been involved in the incident. Ald. Scott Waguespack (32nd) confirmed the heightened security measures in the area.
Chicago police issued a “seeking to identify bulletin” with the two images, urging anyone who recognizes the vehicle or the individual to come forward. The bulletin stated that the driver and passenger of a 2020 Buick Envision SUV fired shots at the victim before fleeing the scene.
The passenger in the images is described as Hispanic, 20 to 35 years old, and 5’7″ to 5’9″ tall. The driver, who was not captured on video, is said to be Black, between 20 and 35 years old, and wearing eyeglasses.
Video footage obtained by CWBChicago shows the red SUV stopping near the basketball courts at Hamlin Park. The passenger exits the vehicle, runs towards the park, fires a shot, and quickly returns to the SUV before speeding away. The actual shooting was partially obstructed by a pickup truck, but individuals who appeared to be high school students were seen fleeing the park before the gunshot.
