Nearly 100 House Democrats have written a letter to the Ethics Committee urging them to release their report on former Congressman Matt Gaetz. The letter, addressed to Chairman Guest and Ranking Member Wild, emphasizes the importance of transparency and accountability in the nomination process for the Attorney General position.

The Democrats express their concern that despite Gaetz’s resignation from Congress, the allegations of serious misconduct against him are still relevant, especially in light of his nomination for the role of Attorney General. They highlight the significance of cabinet members in advising the President and the Senate’s constitutional duty to provide advice and consent on presidential nominees.

The Ethics Committee had announced in April 2021 that they were investigating allegations against Gaetz, including sexual misconduct, drug use, misuse of state identification records, and improper use of campaign funds. The Democrats argue that the seriousness of these charges warrants the release of the committee’s findings to ensure that the Senate is fully informed when considering Gaetz’s nomination.

The letter also references Republican Senator John Cornyn’s statement, emphasizing the importance of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s investigation and the need for access to the Ethics Committee’s report. The Democrats stress that withholding this information could hinder the Senate’s ability to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities in providing advice and consent on Gaetz’s nomination.

The letter concludes by calling for the immediate release of the Ethics Committee’s report, stating that there is no reason for its withholding. It also criticizes Speaker Mike Johnson for allegedly pressuring the committee not to release the report, asserting that the committee has a duty to the American people and the Constitution to ensure that a potential sex trafficker does not become the nation’s next Attorney General.

In light of these concerns, the Democrats urge the Ethics Committee to prioritize transparency and accountability in the nomination process and release their report on Matt Gaetz. The Senate’s access to all available information is essential in ensuring a thorough and informed evaluation of Gaetz’s suitability for the position of Attorney General.
