Off-Duty Correctional Officer Fires at Robbers in West Loop

In a surprising turn of events, an off-duty Cook County correctional officer thwarted an attempted robbery in the West Loop by firing at the perpetrators who were trying to rob him. The incident took place in the early hours of the morning, and although no injuries were reported at the scene, a man with multiple gunshot wounds later arrived at Rush Hospital under suspicious circumstances.

According to Chicago police, the 24-year-old correctional officer was walking in the 200 block of North Morgan when a masked robber emerged from a white Ford Expedition and demanded his belongings. Instead of complying, the officer drew his weapon and opened fire on the robbers. The suspects fled the scene, abandoning a handgun in an alley in the 900 block of West Lake.

Approximately 30 minutes after the shooting, a 31-year-old man arrived at Rush Hospital in a rideshare, seeking treatment for gunshot wounds to his leg and torso. He claimed to have been shot near Sangamon and Lake streets, close to where the attempted robbery occurred, raising suspicions that he may have been one of the robbers involved.

Furthermore, the suspects left behind a stolen SUV that caught fire at the scene. Initially, 15 shell casings were found in the area, but the count later rose to 23 casings as the investigation progressed.
