Chicago Man Charged with Felony Retail Theft

A 25-year-old Chicago man, Maxwell Antonian, is facing eight felony counts of retail theft for allegedly shoplifting from a Lakeview store multiple times in August and September. Despite the stolen merchandise being valued at less than $300, Antonian’s charges were upgraded to felonies due to his previous theft convictions.

Under the leadership of Cook County State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke, there has been a resurgence in enforcing state laws regarding retail theft charges. Unlike her predecessor, Kim Foxx, who raised the threshold for felony charges, O’Neill Burke is following the statutory guidelines for prosecuting repeat offenders.

Antonian’s alleged thefts occurred at Marshall’s on North Clark Street on various dates, with the stolen items ranging from $80 to $225 in value. He was apprehended by police on New Year’s Eve in Wrigleyville after officers recognized him from previous incidents.

Aside from the incidents at Marshall’s, Antonian had a string of run-ins with the law, including shoplifting sunglasses from Neiman Marcus, reckless conduct at a police station, and other misdemeanor theft charges at different locations in Chicago.

Despite facing multiple charges, Antonian received a 200-day sentence to resolve his cases, with some charges being dropped. The case highlights the renewed focus on prosecuting repeat offenders for retail theft in Cook County.
