The story follows the journey of Emma Harte, a teenage servant in Yorkshire who rises to become a successful retail magnate and must decide who will carry on her legacy. The miniseries garnered high viewership ratings and received Emmy nominations for outstanding limited series and supporting actress for Deborah Kerr.

Following the success of “A Woman of Substance,” Taylor Bradford continued to write numerous bestselling novels, including sequels to the Emma Harte saga such as “Hold the Dream” and “To Be the Best.” She also authored several other book series like the Ravenscar Trilogy, the Cavendon Chronicles, and the House of Falconer. In addition to her fiction works, Taylor Bradford wrote non-fiction books on topics like etiquette, homemaking, and children’s books about Christianity.

Taylor Bradford married film producer Robert E. Bradford in 1963, who later produced the screen adaptations of her novels. In recognition of her literary contributions, she was honored as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2007.
