Barbara Taylor Bradford, a renowned author best known for her bestselling novel “A Woman of Substance,” passed away at the age of 91 in her home in New York City. The news of her death was confirmed by a spokesperson to the Associated Press. Born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England in 1933, Taylor Bradford started her career as a journalist before venturing into writing novels in her 40s. She was known for her stories revolving around strong young women who overcome obstacles to achieve success in the business world.

Her debut novel, “A Woman of Substance,” published in 1979, became a massive success, selling over 30 million copies worldwide. The novel was later adapted into a highly acclaimed three-part miniseries by Channel 4 in 1984, starring Jenny Seagrove, Deborah Kerr, Barry Bostwick, and Liam Neeson. The story follows the journey of Emma Harte, a teenage servant in Yorkshire who rises to become a successful retail magnate and must decide who will carry on her legacy. The miniseries garnered high viewership ratings and received Emmy nominations for outstanding limited series and supporting actress for Deborah Kerr.

Following the success of “A Woman of Substance,” Taylor Bradford continued to write numerous bestselling novels, including sequels to the Emma Harte saga such as “Hold the Dream” and “To Be the Best.” She also authored several other book series like the Ravenscar Trilogy, the Cavendon Chronicles, and the House of Falconer. In addition to her fiction works, Taylor Bradford wrote non-fiction books on topics like etiquette, homemaking, and children’s books about Christianity.

Taylor Bradford married film producer Robert E. Bradford in 1963, who later produced the screen adaptations of her novels. The couple relocated to the United States, where Taylor Bradford became a U.S. citizen in 1992. In recognition of her literary contributions, she was honored as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2007. Sadly, Taylor Bradford was preceded in death by her husband in 2019.
