Ambition has always been a complex issue for female characters on television, as we have seen with iconic figures like Mary Richards from “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” in the 1970s. When Mary applied for a secretarial job but ended up as an associate producer, it was a subtle commentary on the challenges women faced in the workplace. Fast forward to today, and we see a similar theme being explored in the character of Deborah Vance on “Hacks,” brilliantly portrayed by Jean Smart.

In the third season of “Hacks,” Deborah, a seasoned comedian, finds herself grappling with the opportunity to host a late-night talk show, a dream she has harbored since childhood. Despite her decades-long career, Deborah initially hesitates to openly express her desire for the position, echoing the societal expectations placed on women to downplay their ambitions. However, with the support of her young writer Ava, Deborah learns to embrace her aspirations unapologetically and confidently declares herself the best person for the job.

What sets Deborah’s story apart is her age. In her 70s, she recognizes that this may be her last chance to achieve her lifelong dream, adding a sense of urgency to her pursuit. This rarity of a female character over 70 actively seeking a high-profile, traditionally male-dominated role highlights the importance of portraying older women as vital and visible in the media.

As Deborah strategically navigates the competitive world of late-night television, she challenges stereotypes and defies expectations, showcasing the depth and complexity that comes with a lifetime of experience. Just as Mary Richards redefined the portrayal of female characters on television, Smart’s portrayal of Deborah expands the possibilities for women on screen, proving that ambition knows no age limit.
