In times of overwhelming stress and chaos, it can feel like we have no control over our lives. Like a small ship being tossed around on a violent sea, it can be a challenging and draining experience. However, there are ways to regain a sense of control and focus on what we can manage.

One effective strategy is to start by taking a few moments to breathe deeply and slowly, focusing only on the sensation of each breath. This simple practice can help calm the body and slow down the mind, reducing feelings of anxiety and helplessness.

It’s important to remember that there are things we can control and things we cannot. By focusing on what we can control, such as our actions, communication, priorities, boundaries, self-care, attitude, personal growth, and what we receive and give, we can start to regain a sense of power and agency in our lives.

On the other hand, there are things we cannot control, such as other people’s actions and reactions, the past, the future, and external forces beyond our influence. Recognizing and accepting these limitations can help us let go of unnecessary worry and frustration.

Here are 10 tips and habits that can help us take control and move forward in challenging situations:

1. Keep in mind why it’s essential to focus on what we can control and create reminders to stay on track.

2. Question the situation by asking if it will matter in the long run, if it’s our problem to solve, if we can actually control it, and how similar situations have played out in the past.

3. Identify actionable steps we can take to improve the situation and break them down into manageable tasks.

4. Keep moving forward by developing a step-by-step plan to address the issue.

5. Remember that there’s always some part we can control, even in seemingly uncontrollable situations.

6. Be mindful of what and who we allow into our minds, limiting exposure to negative influences and prioritizing positive sources of support.

7. Prioritize self-care, especially during challenging times, by exercising, relaxing, and finding things to look forward to.

8. Learn how to say no to protect our time and energy for what truly matters to us.

9. Practice letting go of things we cannot control to free up mental space and focus on what we can influence.

10. Cultivate gratitude as a daily or weekly habit to shift our mindset from negativity to positivity and empowerment.

By implementing these tips and habits, we can take control of our lives, manage stress more effectively, and move forward with confidence and resilience.
