The 13th Hororata Highland Games held on Saturday was a massive success, attracting 700 competitors, 140 stallholders, 23 clans, and over 10,000 visitors. Chieftain Richard Lang, a long-time supporter of the festival, expressed his pride in how the event has grown to become a prominent fixture on the Canterbury event calendar. The Oceania Heavyweight Championship was a highlight of the day, with Australian Terry Sparkes winning the title for the fourth year in a row. The Women’s Championship saw Kelly Drummond setting a new record, while Connor O’Brien took home the Men’s Championship. The event also featured the largest gathering of pipe bands in New Zealand outside of the Nationals, with 19 bands participating in the Chieftain’s Welcoming ceremony.
