The recent surprise attack by Ukraine on Russia resulted in the destruction of 13 tanks and the loss of 1,300 square kilometers of Russian territory in the Sumy province. The attack, which took place on August 6, caught Vladimir Putin’s forces off guard, leading to shocking scenes of devastation and displacement among ordinary Russian civilians.
Defense Editor Jerome Starkey reported on the aftermath of the blitz, highlighting the impact on civilians in Russia. The assault drones used by Ukraine ruthlessly blitzed Putin’s troops and their counter-defensive tanks, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Video footage shared online captured the precision drone strikes targeting Russian soldiers as they tried to escape in tanks and on foot.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky orchestrated the attack as part of a strategy to end the ongoing conflict with Russia. The aim was to make ordinary Russians “feel” the impacts of the war unleashed by Putin, leading to Russia’s worst defeat on home soil since World War II. The swift military actions left many civilians stranded, unable to evacuate in time.
In the town of Sudzha, now under Ukrainian control, scenes of chaos and destruction prevailed. Residents like Olga, a 23-year-old taxi dispatcher, were separated from their families as they fled the area. Ukrainian troops set up temporary shelters to provide necessities for those left behind, but the vandalized statue of Lenin in the town square stood as a stark symbol of the turmoil.
The remaining civilians in Sudzha, estimated to be around 600 out of a pre-war population of 5,000, faced uncertainty and fear in the aftermath of the conflict. They expressed frustration with the Russian soldiers for their poor defense and hasty retreat, leaving them in a state of limbo. Despite the grim situation, Ukrainian forces are working to provide support and aid to those affected by the attack.
