A teenage boy, aged 14, was injured by gunfire outside a fast-food establishment in the Loop on Friday afternoon following a reported altercation among a group of students.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the altercation took place in the 100 block of South Wells Street around 4:05 PM. Approximately fifteen minutes later, multiple 911 calls were made regarding gunshots and a person who had been shot in that area.
According to police, an individual âproduced a firearm and discharged shots in the direction of a 14-year-old male victim who was near the sidewalk.â The victim sustained a gunshot wound to his leg and was transported to Lurie Childrenâs Hospital of Chicago, where he is now in stable condition.
An officer who examined surveillance footage instructed fellow officers to be vigilant for two suspects described as Black males wearing black outfits who fled westward on Monroe Street post-shooting.
As of Friday evening, no arrests had been reported.
This incident marks the seventh shooting in the Loop in 2025 so far, in contrast to twelve shootings at the same time last year. By this date in 2023, there had been fourteen shootings in the Loop.
The current numbers are a stark drop from pandemic levels, which saw 34 shootings by this point in 2022, 26 in 2021, and 15 in 2020. In 2019, there were only four recorded shootings in the Loop for the entire year.

CWBChicago was established in 2013 by a group of five residents from Wrigleyville and Boystown who were frustrated with the inaccurate information presented at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings.
Since then, our coverage has broadened to include Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other areas on the North Side. Yet, our mission remains the same: to deliver original public safety reporting with better context and more detail than mainstream media can offer.
