Ancient Giant Shark Predated Megalodon by 15 Million Years
A recent discovery has shed light on an ancient giant shark that prowled the oceans 115 million years ago, predating the famous megalodon. This massive shark, larger than modern-day great whites, was estimated to be about eight meters in length based on the analysis of five vertebrae found on an Australian beach.
According to a study published in Communications Biology, this ancient shark roamed the waters off Australia long before the megalodon emerged. Benjamin Kear, a senior curator at the Swedish Museum of Natural History and co-author of the study, described the shark as a “gigantic” predator that resembled modern-day sharks, showcasing an evolutionary success story that spanned millions of years.
While sharks have a 450-million-year history on Earth, the ancestors of modern great whites only appear in the fossil record around 135 million years ago. Previous discoveries suggested that giant sharks like megalodons evolved around 100 million years ago. However, the new findings indicate that giant sharks existed earlier than previously thought, challenging existing timelines of shark evolution.
The research team behind this discovery plans to search for more ancient giant shark remains to further elucidate the evolutionary history of these ocean predators. Kear emphasized the importance of understanding the ancestors of these giant sharks, stating that “this thing had ancestors.”
This groundbreaking discovery highlights the rich history of sharks on Earth and provides valuable insights into the evolution of these fascinating creatures. By uncovering the secrets of ancient giant sharks, scientists can piece together the puzzle of shark evolution and gain a deeper understanding of these iconic marine predators.
