Esteemed British producer Pat Tookey-Dickson, known for her work on Netflix’s ambitious series “1899” and the popular BBC Studios comedy “Ghosts,” has joined forces with Ukrainian-Canadian writer and creator Anastasiia Starova for her latest project titled “A Remarkable Woman.”

This upcoming period dramedy is a collaboration between Tookey-Dickson’s Right Side Productions based in the UK and A Remarkable Woman Productions located in Canada. This transatlantic partnership aims to highlight a narrative of significant feminist importance that resonates across international borders.

Described by the creator Starova as “‘Fleabag’ in a corset” or “‘Emily in Paris’ à la Proust,” this eight-part series merges the enchanting backdrop of Belle Époque Paris with the vibrant and chaotic storytelling style of Gen Z.

The series draws inspiration from the diaries of the pioneering Ukrainian artist and feminist Marie Bashkirtseff, widely recognized as the world’s first female influencer. It revisits her final years in the 1880s, a time when she endeavored to combat the inevitability of death by crafting her own image and attaining fame.

In “A Remarkable Woman,” Marie, a spirited young woman of lower nobility, discovers her lung disease is terminal. Believing that she is meant for greatness, she embarks on a daring quest to secure her legacy before the sands of time slip away.

Despite her intelligence, charm, and relentless ambition drawing attention her way, Marie faces a host of challenges, including deteriorating health, societal prejudices, and familial discord.

This series delves into the delicate equilibrium between self-expression and mortality, portraying Bashkirtseff as a proto-modern heroine whose narrative continues to resonate into the present day.

“’A Remarkable Woman’ is the tale of the original influencer—a tragicomic, contemporary voice that breaks through the annals of history to connect with us today,” Starova explained in an interview with Variety. “It captures the essence of Belle Époque in its full splendor while embracing a distinctly Gen Z tone, chaotic, raw, and undeniably authentic.”

Currently in development, the series has garnered attention within the industry, having been part of the MidPoint Series Launch 2022 and securing the prize for Best Co-Production Pitch at Seriencamp 2025.

The innovative fusion of historical biopic, social commentary, and feminist perspective aligns with a burgeoning trend for hybrid dramas that root themselves in real-life events while challenging narrative and stylistic conventions.

The production team behind “A Remarkable Woman,” which has been selected to feature at Iberseries & Platino Industria 2025’s Co-Production and Financing Forum, is actively engaging in discussions with potential co-producers, seeking to bring this compelling story to life.
