LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rob Reiner, the renowned director and actor, and his wife Michele were discovered deceased at their Los Angeles residence, as confirmed by a law enforcement official familiar with the case.
The official, who requested anonymity, could not disclose further details of the ongoing investigation.
Initial reports indicate that the couple may have sustained stab wounds, with a family member currently under scrutiny by investigators.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical emergency at the property, where they found the lifeless bodies of a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman. Reiner, who celebrated his 78th birthday in March, was a prolific figure in the film industry.
Capt. Mike Bland of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery Homicide Division confirmed that an investigation into a suspected homicide is underway at the Reiner residence.
While authorities have not officially identified the deceased individuals, the upscale Brentwood neighborhood has been shaken by the tragic event.
Rob Reiner, known for directing iconic films such as “This is Spinal Tap” and “The Princess Bride,” was a pivotal figure in shaping Hollywood’s cinematic landscape.
His portrayal of Meathead in “All in the Family” propelled him to stardom and earned him accolades, including two Emmy Awards.
Messages to Reiner’s representatives went unanswered as the industry mourns this profound loss.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed her sorrow over Reiner’s passing, acknowledging his immense impact on American culture and social justice advocacy.
The son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, Rob Reiner had been married to photographer Michele Singer Reiner since 1989, with whom he shares three children.
Reiner was previously wed to actor-director Penny Marshall, and he adopted her daughter, Tracy Reiner. Both Carl Reiner and Marshall passed away in recent years.
The Brentwood neighborhood, known for its celebrity residents, rarely witnesses violent crimes. The location of the incident is close to where Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were tragically murdered in 1994.
