Violence Erupts at Grant Park Skate Park
Three men were left with knife wounds following a violent altercation at the Grant Park skate park in the Loop on Tuesday evening, as reported by Chicago police. Charges are pending against one of the involved individuals.
According to authorities, the dispute among the group escalated when one of them brandished a “sharp object” and proceeded to stab the other two men. An officer present at the scene mentioned that a “machete” was being retrieved by evidence technicians at the skate park.
A 38-year-old man sustained multiple stab wounds to his chest, flank, and buttocks and was deemed to be in critical condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The second victim, a 28-year-old man approaching his 29th birthday, opted not to seek medical attention for an arm laceration, as per police reports.
The two victims managed to disarm the third individual and retaliated by inflicting stab wounds on him, targeting his leg, arm, and head. The 30-year-old suspect, with a history of arrests primarily related to retail theft, was in critical condition under police supervision at Stroger Hospital. Authorities have refrained from disclosing his identity at this time.
Incidents of violence are unfortunately not uncommon at the skate park. In a previous case, a man received a 25-year sentence for the murder of a homeless individual who was sleeping near a sculpture close to the park.
In June 2023, a man was charged with stabbing a woman critically at the skate park. Joshua Shaw remains incarcerated at Cook County jail on an attempted murder charge linked to that incident.
In the summer of 2022, a robbery series involving an armed assailant targeting individuals at and around the skate park remained unresolved. Earlier in the same year, five minors were apprehended for assaulting and robbing a man at the skate park.
In September 2021, a 26-year-old man was shot during a confrontation at the skate park. The previous summer, a 15-year-old boy sustained a graze wound to his head while at the facility.
