Drive-By Shooting Injures Three Men Near Humboldt Park Puerto Rican Festival

Three men were injured in a drive-by shooting near the annual Puerto Rican Festival in Humboldt Park on Saturday night, Chicago police reported. The victims were standing with a group in the 1100 block of North California Avenue around 10 p.m. when a vehicle approached. At least one occupant fired shots from the vehicle, which some witnesses described as a blue van.

All three victims were reported in fair condition: a 27-year-old man with gunshot wounds to both legs, a 42-year-old man shot in the left calf, and a 45-year-old man shot in the right leg, according to police.

Unfortunately, shootings have occurred annually at or near the festival. Last year, two suburban men were charged with firing toward a crowd, but no injuries were reported. Another man received a 32-year sentence for killing a woman and injuring a tourist during a double-shooting in 2021.

In a surprising turn of events, a high-ranking Chicago Police Department officer faces criminal charges for allegedly slashing tires near the Puerto Rican Festival while on duty and in uniform last year.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets.
