The city of Chicago has been plagued by a series of robbery sprees, with the latest incident occurring in the South Loop on Sunday evening. Police were able to detain three suspects following the spree, but it is unclear if they were involved in the crimes. As of now, no charges have been announced against them.
This recent spree was the third in the area since Friday, targeting neighborhoods from the West Loop to Humboldt Park. There have been at least three additional sprees reported in the same area since November 22.
The robberies on Sunday began around 2:40 p.m. near Augusta and Pulaski, where four men dressed in black robbed a street vendor of his wallet. Shortly after, three masked men armed with guns robbed another man near Division and Damen in Wicker Park. The suspects abandoned their blue Hyundai with Georgia license plates, which was later found by police.
The spree continued as four robbers in their teens or early 20s robbed a man of his AirPods and phone in the 1200 block of West Fulton Market. Another incident involved three masked men attacking a man near Chicago Avenue and Ada Street, although they did not succeed in stealing any valuables.
Police were able to track down a white SUV believed to be a Volkswagen Tiguan with Florida license plates, leading to the detention of three occupants at a BP station on South Wabash. However, another robbery was reported on Western Avenue and Iowa Street, where three masked men in a white car robbed a victim before fleeing the scene.
Witnesses described the suspects as White males wearing masks, while all the other robbery suspects were described as Black males in their mid-teens to early 20s wearing black masks and clothing.
This recent surge in robbery sprees is not an isolated incident, with similar incidents reported in the area in recent weeks. Multiple people have been robbed during sprees that span from the West Side to Lincoln Park. These incidents have raised concerns about the safety of residents in the affected neighborhoods.
It is crucial for law enforcement to address these issues and ensure the safety and security of the community. Collaboration between police and residents is essential in combating these crimes and bringing those responsible to justice. Stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities to help prevent further incidents.
