4 Reasons why WWE SmackDown is going back to 3 hours

WWE SmackDown is set to return to a three-hour format in 2026, as announced by Michael Cole on the show itself. This change will kick in starting from the January 2 episode, marking a shift from its current two-hour runtime.

The blue brand previously experimented with a three-hour show from January to June this year, and now it seems poised for another run in the new year. There are several reasons behind this change, and we will delve into four of them.

  1. To accommodate a larger roster: Despite having a smaller roster compared to WWE RAW, SmackDown boasts a lineup of top-tier talent. With the likes of Jacob Fatu and Randy Orton returning, along with potential NXT call-ups, the roster is expected to expand. A three-hour runtime would allow for more superstars, matches, and segments to be featured on the show.
  2. To prepare for WrestleMania 42: The road to WrestleMania is a crucial period for WWE, with the Royal Rumble set to kick off the season on January 31. By extending the show to three hours, WWE can showcase all their major stars leading up to the grand event, building anticipation and momentum.
  3. To give superstars more time to build storylines: The longer runtime would provide matches and promo segments with the opportunity to be fleshed out, addressing the recent ratings slump that SmackDown experienced. This would allow for more in-depth storytelling and character development, enhancing the overall product.
  4. To allow WWE SmackDown to become the Land of Opportunity again: While the show has struggled with lackluster feuds and repetitive booking, there is a resurgence in the mid-card scene with talents like Ilja Dragunov, Carmelo Hayes, and others vying for the United States Championship. By extending the runtime, newer talents could be introduced, giving them a platform to shine and establish themselves as major stars, revitalizing the brand’s reputation as the Land of Opportunity.

With these factors in play, the return to a three-hour format for WWE SmackDown in 2026 holds promise for an exciting and revitalized show. Fans can look forward to more action, compelling storylines, and the emergence of new talent on the blue brand.
