Qualcomm made headlines at its annual Snapdragon Summit with the introduction of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, its cutting-edge flagship mobile processor.
This latest chipset follows the Snapdragon 8 Elite from the previous year, but deviates from the standard naming convention as it isn’t dubbed the Elite 2. Nonetheless, Qualcomm’s assertions and promises surrounding this new processor indicate it will power some of the most advanced smartphones and tablets expected to launch in the coming years, including the anticipated Xiaomi 17 series.
Here are five key enhancements that stand out:
Agentic AI
Before diving into performance metrics, it’s essential to highlight the significance of AI in today’s tech environment, particularly in mobile devices.
The 8 Elite Gen 5 emphasizes on-device AI capabilities, which are critical since lengthy latency periods for AI operations render them impractical.
With a Hexagon NPU performance enhancement of at least 37%, alongside a revamped Qualcomm Sensing Hub, users can expect quicker execution of AI tasks.
Qualcomm refers to this feature as Agentic AI, characterizing it as an autonomous system that evolves from being merely reactive to acting as an intelligent collaborator that adapts and makes decisions independently on your behalf. Exciting developments are on the horizon.
Enhanced CPU Performance
It’s a standard expectation for each new processor to surpass its predecessor in speed, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 delivers on this front.
Boldly, Qualcomm claims it to be the “world’s fastest mobile system-on-a-chip,” featuring the “fastest mobile CPU to date,” attributed to various upgrades and enhancements.
The standout performance figure is a notable 20% increase in speed from the Oryon CPU, now achieving up to 4.6GHz. This advancement is particularly commendable amidst current technological limits.
As a result, daily usage on devices equipped with the 8 Elite Gen 5 should feel significantly smoother, with Qualcomm promising “lightning-fast multitasking and seamless app transitions.”

Seamless Gaming Experience
On the graphics front, the 8 Elite Gen 5 boasts a 23% increase in graphics performance via the Adreno GPU while concurrently achieving a 20% increase in power efficiency.
Additionally, the introduction of Adreno High Performance Memory (HPM) with 18Mb of dedicated cache aims to facilitate enhanced efficiency and visual rendering.
Notably, this chipset supports full Unreal Engine 5 capabilities, bringing console-quality graphics to mobile devices “for the first time.”
Improved Battery Life (Potentially)
Striking a balance in this powerhouse processor is paramount; after all, what use is lightning-fast processing if it drains your battery rapidly?
Qualcomm asserts that the CPU’s power efficiency is 35% higher than that of the Snapdragon 8 Elite, resulting in an overall 16% power saving for the SoC (system on a chip).

Enhanced Photography and Video Capabilities
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 introduces the ability to record video using the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec, marking it as the first mobile platform to offer this feature.
This capability catalyzes a new era of professional-grade video production, further reinforced by innovative AI camera technology.
According to Qualcomm, this means “creatives can realize their artistic vision with studio-quality video recordings and extensive post-production control.”
The capabilities extend to a fully computational video pipeline, enabling frame extraction, context-aware auto-focus, auto-white balance, and auto-exposure. Additionally, Snapdragon Audio Sense promises “industry-leading” wind noise reduction, audio zoom, and HDR audio capabilities.
On the photography side, the Spectra ISP (image signal processor) has seen enhancements with AI integration that supports the latest Night Vision 3.0 capabilities and real-time tone adjustments. The ISP also features a new 20-bit pipeline, increasing dynamic range by four times.
