As the cold weather sets in, it’s important to take proactive measures to keep your immune system strong and fend off any potential illnesses that may come your way. While getting enough sleep and eating nutrient-rich foods are key components of staying healthy, there are additional strategies you can implement to boost your immune system. Here, three nutritionists share their top tips for staying well during sick season.

1. Prioritize antioxidants
According to W-Wellness nutritional therapist Maz Packham, vitamin C is a crucial nutrient for supporting immune function. This powerful antioxidant is essential for our white blood cells to defend the body against infection. To increase your intake of vitamin C, incorporate foods such as kiwis, citrus fruits like lemons and limes, berries, and peppers into your diet.

2. Think color
Nutritionist and functional medicine practitioner Farzanah Nasser recommends adding a variety of colorful fruits, vegetables, and plants to your meals. These vibrant foods are rich in immune-supporting nutrients like vitamin C, beta carotene, and zinc. Nasser suggests incorporating ingredients like pumpkin into breads, adding root vegetables to bone broth soups, and harnessing the antiviral properties of matcha to boost your immune system.

3. Stock up on vitamin D
Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to increased susceptibility to infections, as well as low mood and fatigue. Packham advises including sources of vitamin D such as oily fish and eggs in your diet, and considering supplementing with a vitamin D supplement. Since sunlight exposure is limited during the winter months and dietary sources of vitamin D are minimal, a high-quality supplement can help boost your levels efficiently.

4. Focus on fiber
Nasser emphasizes the importance of consuming an adequate amount of fiber each day to support a healthy immune system. Aim for 30g of fiber daily to nourish your gut microbiome, which plays a key role in immune function. By including more fiber in your diet, you can help train your immune cells and maintain overall health.

By following these expert-approved tips and incorporating immune-boosting foods into your daily routine, you can strengthen your defenses against the winter lurgy and stay healthy throughout the season. Prioritize your health by prioritizing nutrient-rich foods, supplements, and gut-friendly choices to ward off illness and promote overall well-being.
