Man Sentenced to Six Years in Prison for Abducting 9-Year-Old Girl in Rogers Park

A 23-year-old man named Terran McKethan has been sentenced to six years in prison for the abduction of a 9-year-old girl outside a grocery store in Rogers Park in August 2022. McKethan pleaded guilty to the abduction as well as to soliciting a 13-year-old girl and her mother for sex just days before the incident, according to court records.

Prosecutors revealed that McKethan approached the mother and daughter near the 6600 block of North Damen on August 14 and asked for a hug. When they refused, he followed them home and then invited them to his nearby apartment for drinks and a threesome. Three days later, McKethan allegedly tried to enter their home after they had gone inside, prompting the mother to call 911, although he had fled before the police arrived.

On August 16, McKethan abducted the 9-year-old girl outside Cermak Fresh Market at 6623 North Damen while her grandmother was getting a shopping cart. The girl fought back by kicking and screaming, eventually biting McKethan’s hand, which caused him to release her. The entire incident was captured on surveillance footage.

Following the abduction, Chicago police issued a community alert with images of the suspect. A resident living across the street from the store identified McKethan as the man in question. Police officers investigating the tip noticed an injury on McKethan’s thumb, matching the location where the 9-year-old girl had bitten her abductor.

Judge Timothy Joyce handed down a six-year sentence to McKethan after he pleaded guilty to aggravated kidnapping. Additionally, he received a concurrent five-year sentence for the indecent solicitation of a child in the previous case. McKethan is required to serve at least 85% of the kidnapping term. With credit for nearly three years spent in pretrial detention, he is expected to be released in approximately two years.
