Anthony Richardson

In a shocking incident from June 2023, a Chicago man found himself back in the legal system just days after earning parole for a previous felony. Anthony Richardson, aged 48, was arrested shortly after his release from Stateville Correctional Center. He faced severe charges for an alleged sexual assault of a woman inside a CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) elevator in the River North neighborhood.

Richardson was ultimately convicted of criminal sexual assault following a guilty plea and sentenced to six years in prison by Judge Neera Walsh. Moreover, the court mandated that he submit his DNA to a law enforcement database and register as a sex offender.

Having been recently incarcerated for felony retail theft, Richardson was released on May 31, 2023, after receiving credit for time served. Just three days into his freedom, on June 3, he was apprehended for the alleged assault on a woman who was incapacitated due to drug use within the Grand Red Line station elevator.

Prosecutors indicated that surveillance footage captured the woman smoking an unknown narcotic before she collapsed. Richardson, unfamiliar with the victim, reportedly entered the elevator, removed his pants, and assaulted her.

The scene escalated when a CTA employee entered the elevator approximately ten minutes later and spotted Richardson making inappropriate movements while holding the woman’s head. Two workers identified him, and upon being confronted, Richardson let go of the woman, who then fell to the ground.

Law enforcement officers arrested Richardson nearby after both workers confirmed his identity as the assailant. While he confessed to the act, his defense attorney raised the issue of his learning disability potentially affecting his comprehension of his Miranda rights.

Richardson’s criminal history is extensive, with a robbery conviction from 2020, multiple narcotic and theft offenses, along with 39 misdemeanor convictions, highlighting a pattern of criminal behavior.
