Art in Odd Places (AiOP) is set to take over 14th Street in Manhattan for its 19th iteration, with a focus on care and empathy. Co-curated by Christopher Kaczmarek and Patricia Miranda, the festival features over 75 artists and collectives activating the street with sculptures, performances, and intimate interactions.

Kaczmarek emphasizes the importance of bringing art to the people and engaging in conversations that delve deeper into the complexities of life. The festival kicks off with installations like a red carpet delineating public and private space and Lisa Hein’s “QUENCH,” a fountain aimed at a Bible verse about thirst.

Theda Sandiford’s “Emotional Baggage Cart Parade” invites participants to unload their emotional baggage by pushing decorated shopping carts. The project sparks conversations about school, bullying, and family, creating connections between strangers on the street.

Maria Seddio, Pia Tempestini, and the WasherWoman Collective present “Wash!,” where participants share stories of grief and loss on washable markers on linen. The stories are pinned to a line and will be washed together, symbolizing the blending of personal experiences.

The diverse range of projects at AiOP showcases different ways of caring for oneself and others, from pumping water to writing unsent letters. The festival encourages spontaneous interactions and conversations among participants and passersby, fostering a sense of community and connection in the bustling city.

Art in Odd Places runs from October 18 to 20, offering a unique opportunity to experience art in unexpected places and engage with artists and their projects. The festival schedule and locations can be found on their website for those interested in exploring the vibrant art scene on 14th Street in Manhattan.
