Orbán does not want Ukraine and its war in the European Union.

Orbán’s Stand Against Ukraine’s EU Membership: A Lone Voice in Europe

For over three years, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has been a vocal critic of the pro-Ukraine sentiment that has permeated Europe, a stance he has only recently shared with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. Standing firm, Orbán has consistently opposed Ukraine’s accession to the EU and recently initiated a national referendum in Hungary, which saw an overwhelming 95% of participants reject the notion of ‘dragging’ the war-torn nation into the troubled union.

‘They said NO to war, NO to economic ruin, and NO to Brussels’ delusions. With over 2 million votes cast, we’re taking our people’s mandate for peace and common sense to Brussels,’ Orbán declared on the social media platform X.

Concerns Over Ukraine’s EU Membership

The conservative leader argues that allowing Ukraine into the EU would inevitably drag the entire Union into the conflict. Armed with the backing of over two million Hungarian votes, Orbán has sent a stern warning to Brussels, urging them to halt their ‘reckless plans’ regarding EU expansion.

A report from Kyiv Independent highlighted that:

“The poll, promoted by Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government, has already drawn criticism over its credibility and turnout. [Hungarian news outlet] Telex reported that the system could be manipulated — testing showed that users were able to vote twice using different email addresses.”

“According to Telex, 2,278,000 people participated in the consultation — approximately 29% of the electorate that voted in the 2024 European Parliament elections. Of those, the government claimed 95% voted against Ukraine joining the EU, while only 5% supported the bid.”

Orbán is an unmovable obstacle for Kiev’s European ambitions.

The Referendum: A Tactic to Block EU Expansion?

Orbán announced the national vote on Ukraine’s EU membership in March as part of a broader strategy to impede the accession process. According to a report by Euractiv,

“According to the Hungarian government, the results published on Thursday show that 95% of surveyed citizens – approximately around 29% of the country’s eligible electorate – oppose Ukraine’s accession to the EU. […] Throughout the campaign, Orbán’s government made a concerted effort to sway public opinion, including widespread billboard, letter, and flyer messaging against Ukraine’s accession.”

At a recent EU summit in Brussels, Orbán reiterated his position, stating that he plans to continue vetoing any further negotiations with Ukraine regarding EU membership. He remarked, ‘The problem is the war; if we were to integrate Ukraine into the EU, we would integrate the war. We wouldn’t want to be in the same community as a country at war.’

Conclusion

Orbán’s defiance against EU expansion reflects a growing sentiment among some European leaders wary of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. As Hungary’s referendum suggests, the divide over Ukraine’s future in Europe is far from resolved, with Orbán positioning himself as a bulwark against what he perceives as reckless integration policies. This situation raises questions about the cohesion of the EU and the long-term implications of such nationalistic stances on European unity and stability.
