Jon Gosselin and Kate Gosselin first captivated audiences with their reality series revolving around their unique family structure, but their relationships with their children have often been less than harmonious.
This former couple, wed from 1999 to 2009, welcomed twins Mady and Cara into the world in October 2000, and their family expanded dramatically in 2004 with the arrival of sextuplets: Collin, Hannah, Aaden, Joel, Alexis, and Leahâturning them into a household of ten.
The Gosselin familyâs evolution from a cast in Discovery Health specials to stars of their own TLC show, Jon & Kate Plus 8, in 2007, showcased the chaotic blend of joy and disarray that defined their lives. After the coupleâs highly publicized split in 2009, the showâs name pivoted to Kate Plus 8, with Kate receiving sole legal custody of the children. However, a significant shift occurred in 2018 when Hannah and Collin chose to live with their father in Pennsylvania, where they have resided ever since.
Currently, all the Gosselin children are legally adults, yet their relationships with each parent are fraught following a bitter custody dispute. âAt this point, the prospect of co-parenting with my ex seems all but finished,â Jon disclosed to Us Weekly in May 2023. âItâs a relief to know they can transition into adulthood without the burden of their parents dragging them into family court.â

Inside Jon and Kate Gosselinâs Relationships With Each of Their 8 Children

To understand the Gosselin family dynamics further, letâs explore each of the childrenâs current standing with their parents:
Mady transitioned to Syracuse University in New York after leaving her motherâs home in North Carolina, but her relationship with her father remains stagnant. In May 2023, Jon admitted he hadnât spoken to Mady or her twin sister, Cara, in almost ten years. âThe last time I spoke to Mady and Cara was in 2014,â he told The U.S. Sun. âI text them periodically, but have not received a response.â
In the meantime, Mady has been vocal about the scrutiny she faces online, defending her family in the process. âThe narratives about our childhood trauma and experiences are not open for public debate. Theyâre our personal lives,â she remarked in a TikTok video in February 2023. âThe portrayal that weâre damaged or some kind of crazy child stars is not only misleading but also does harm to our journeys as we strive to make our own paths.â
Unlike Mady, Cara also left home to attend Fordham University in the Bronx. When discussing their estrangement, Jon stated in May 2023 that he had not spoken to Cara since 2014 either, indicating he would not attend their graduations. Cara, while keeping a lower profile on social media, is also disconnected from her father.
Having moved in with his father in 2018, Collin has openly expressed the friction in his relationship with Kate. He has discussed the detrimental effects of his time spent in various institutions on their connection, a situation that stemmed from Kate seeking treatment for what she termed his âspecial needs.â Collinâs plea for help in a letter to his father surfaced publicly in 2017, leading to Jon securing legal custody after Kate and her counsel defaulted in court.
Upon graduating from high school in June 2023, Collin notably omitted his mother from a tribute thanking his family for their support throughout his educational journey.
His critiques of Kate escalated in an interview with The U.S. Sun, where he alleged that she had left him isolated in a basement room, even asserting that he was physically restrained. Kateâs representatives countered these claims, stating she had never intended to harm Collin.
Collin voiced hope for a future reconciliation, should Kate reveal the truth behind their troubled histories. âOnly when she comes clean about all that sheâs hidden can we have that conversation,â he expressed.
Hannah also moved in with Jon, claiming that her brother Collin experienced separation from the rest of the family during their upbringing. âHe couldnât engage with us or even share dining experiences,â Hannah recounted during an interview for Vice TVâs docuseries Dark Side of the 2000s. Despite moving out, the familial tensions continued, particularly with Kate, affecting her ability to maintain contact with her siblings. âShe loves them dearly, but the estrangement weighs on her,â offered an insider.
Notably, Hannah and Collin were absent from a series of photos celebrating the sextupletsâ 21st birthday, highlighting the ongoing rifts.
Aaden, alongside his siblings Joel, Alexis, and Leah, currently lives with Kate in North Carolina and has distanced himself from Jon. They are not active on social media, resulting in them being less visible compared to their siblings Collin and Hannah. Jon expressed in April 2023 that Kate has discouraged communication between him and the children, complicating his attempts to reconnect. âMy kids are pleasers, and they want to make their mom happy, so I respect that, but I have always wished to remain connected,â he said.
Living with Kate, Joel has also lost touch with Jon. Jon lamented the difficulty in communicating with the children residing with their mother, suggesting that Kateâs approach alienates him. âI feel itâs detrimental to their understanding of family,â he expressed, hoping for a future where they might rebuild connections.
Alexis resides with Kate and does not engage in social media, which serves to obscure her visibility in the public eye. Jon has expressed a glimmer of hope for reconciliation, stating, âSince they are adults now, I believe they might feel less influenced by her and the management. My door remains open for them,â he asserted in April 2023.
Leah, who also lives with Kate in North Carolina, caught Jonâs hopeful eye over potential future bonding opportunities due to their proximity. âI think our locations might facilitate a meeting,â he shared in May 2023, indicating a desire for reconciliation.
