“This situation has been a profound tragedy for my family, and I sincerely hope it can be handled privately moving forward,” expressed Senator Nicole Mitchell.
The Minnesota senator finds herself in a hotbed of controversy after her arrest on Monday in Detroit Lakes, a development she firmly denies was any act of malice.
Following a 4:45 a.m. call to the police, officers discovered Ms. Mitchell inside a residence, leading to her arrest and subsequent charges of first-degree burglary by the Becker County Attorney’s Office.
In a statement on Facebook, Ms. Mitchell clarified her intentions, stating she entered the home to check on a family member facing “a decline due to Alzheimer’s disease and associated paranoia.”
“Upon hearing concerning medical news over the weekend, I felt compelled to visit a home I’ve frequented for the past 20 years, where I even had a room when my son was younger,” she elaborated.
“Regrettably, I startled the family member, which escalated their paranoia, leading to accusations of theft, which I categorically deny,” she asserted.
She acknowledged and appreciated the support from friends and bipartisan colleagues during this challenging time, emphasizing her hope that it can be regarded as a personal family issue.
The complaint filed by the Becker County Attorney paints a different picture: Ms. Mitchell was discovered wearing dark clothing and a hat in the basement of the home.
As the incident unfolded, she reportedly told the alleged victim, identified as her stepmother, “I was just trying to get a couple of my dad’s things because we haven’t spoken in a while.” This estrangement reportedly followed an argument between them.
Ms. Mitchell mentioned a desire to reclaim personal items of sentimental value, including photos, ashes, and a shirt belonging to her late father, but claimed her stepmother denied her access to these keepsakes.
Additionally, law enforcement located a backpack on-site containing Ms. Mitchell’s Senate identification, driver’s license, cell phone, Tupperware, and two laptops, one of which allegedly bore her stepmother’s name upon powering up.
While Ms. Mitchell claimed the laptops were gifts from her stepmother, this account was denied by the victim, adding another layer to this already convoluted family drama.
Growing Calls for Resignation
In the aftermath, Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson from East Grand Forks publicly urged Ms. Mitchell to step down without delay. “I acknowledge the complexities surrounding her family’s circumstances; however, her actions are deeply troubling,” he asserted.
“Such conduct is unbecoming of a legislative member, and she should resign from her position immediately,” he declared.
Bryan Strawser, chairman of the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus, also called for her resignation, implying that her ongoing presence undermines public trust. “Senator Mitchell occupies a position that demands integrity, and the severity of these charges indeed suggests a breach of that trust,” he stated. “Immediate action is required.”
Rob Doar, the senior vice president of the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus, added that Ms. Mitchell’s felony charges spark significant worries over her ability to make critical judgments regarding public safety.
“While we empathize with her recent bereavement, adherence to the rule of law is paramount,” he asserted, reiterating that her judgment appears compromised in matters affecting community welfare.
It’s worth noting that just a week prior to her arrest, Ms. Mitchell had participated with Moms Demand Action on multiple campaigns advocating for reform and improved community safety measures. The aim of these efforts was to spotlight essential mental health services needed to combat gun violence in Minnesota, as highlighted in her posts on X (formerly Twitter).
