Pete Davidson revealed that a heart-wrenching conversation with his mother served as a catalyst for his commitment to sobriety. Caught off-guard by her fear of living to hear news of his potential death, he found the motivation he needed.
The comedian opened up about this emotionally charged exchange during his appearance on Theo Von‘s podcast, ‘This Past Weekend’, where he recounted how his mom, Amy Waters, laid bare her feelings while he was in rehab.
Davidson described Amy as “the most supportive person in the world.” He shared that she expressed a deep concern, fearing that one day she’d turn on the television only to discover that her son had succumbed to his struggles with addiction.
He recounted, “That killed me, so I was like, âI can’t die until she’s dead.ââ
Of course, the memory of his father, Scott, a New York City firefighter who lost his life on 9/11, weighed heavily on Pete. He realized that he couldn’t inflict similar heartache on his mother again.

He candidly admitted that he would have to be “sociopathic” to ignore the support of those around him as he fought against his own self-destructive tendencies.
Davidson also mentioned his partner, Elsie Hewitt, with whom he is expecting his first child. He acknowledged that being a soon-to-be father wouldn’t be feasible without first achieving sobriety.
Clearly, Pete’s mother played a pivotal role in his journey to recovery… and what a delightful twistâsheâs due for a grandbaby in the process!
