Why hundreds of activists are heading to Gaza with the Global Sumud Flotilla

A remarkable coalition of activists is making waves in a new chapter of peaceful protest by sailing to Gaza on the Global Sumud Flotilla. This vibrant collective is expected to arrive at their destination on Thursday, October 2, 2025, or shortly thereafter.

The Global Sumud Flotilla consists of 51 vessels carrying around 500 activists from 45 different nations. This ambitious journey commenced on Monday, September 1, 2025, as they navigate towards Gaza to deliver critical humanitarian assistance.

Among the notable civilians aboard are Ada Colau, the former Mayor of Barcelona; Mandla Mandela, grandson of the legendary Nelson Mandela; environmental advocate Greta Thunberg; Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila; and British-Palestinian author Kieran Andrieu.

Attacks on the Flotilla

In a heartfelt message to his fellow sailors, Thiago Ávila expressed: “We continue this journey for those in Gaza who have no other recourse. Joining you in this global uprising has been the utmost honor of my life.”

The primary goal of the Flotilla is to breach the unlawful blockade of Gaza by sea, establish a humanitarian corridor, and raise awareness about the enduring oppression of the Palestinian populace.

Climate activist Greta Thunberg spoke passionately about the situation, stating, “The violence unfolding in Gaza today is unprecedented, and we cannot consent to this genocide. We also reject the illegal occupation, siege, and apartheid that is being enforced.” She added, “Can we truly expect a world that allows such atrocities? If we desire to combat climate issues effectively, we must confront justice on occupied land.”

Since departing from Barcelona, the flotilla has already sustained 15 unlawful strikes in international waters from unidentified aggressors.

Rising Concerns

On the night of September 23, the flotilla faced three separate drone attacks employing stun grenades and irritants, yet fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Among the flotilla’s passengers—journalists, legislators, humanitarians, medical professionals, artists, attorneys, and grassroots activists—there persists an unwavering commitment to their peaceful mission to Gaza.

Public statements from the activists underline that any assaults on the flotilla are dwarfed in comparison to the systemic violence endured by the Palestinian people.

Over the past two years, Palestinians have suffered significantly due to what the United Nations has highlighted as a genocidal campaign perpetrated by Israel, resulting in over 65,000 Palestinian casualties since 2023.

Unity in Humanity

The Israeli government has resorted to labeling the Global Sumud Flotilla as a front for Hamas, a baseless allegation according to corroborating evidence.

However, the enduring quest for humanitarian justice binds these activists together as they brave the risks associated with the blockade of Gaza. Their conviction in this mission has inspired thousands internationally to rally behind their cause.

In response to the flotilla’s assaults, protests erupted across Italy, leading to both Italy and Spain deploying navy vessels to escort the activist convoy. Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto emphasized that the government’s decision is not one of provocation, but rather an “act of humanity.”

Empowerment Through Solidarity

Since May 2025, peaceful pro-Palestine demonstrations advocating for an end to the genocide have spanned several countries—including Brazil, Australia, Malaysia, Kenya, Belgium, Senegal, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, the United States, Canada, Switzerland, and Ireland.

The ongoing genocide in Gaza is exacerbated by the machinery of war, which simultaneously propels the global climate crisis.

The Global Sumud Flotilla stands as a testament to radical love and humanitarian solidarity as it sails forward with resilience and compassion, ready to deliver hope in the form of aid to the Palestinian people.

With the world’s eyes upon them and the protection of Italy and Spain, they bravely advance towards Gaza, carrying not just supplies, but the promise of solidarity and support.
