Damar Hamlin, a starting safety for the Buffalo Bills, has been making headlines for his impressive performance on the field, helping lead his team to a 3-1 record in the National Football League season. However, what many people may not know is the incredible story of survival that lies behind Damar’s success.

In January 2023, Damar experienced a cardiac arrest during a Monday Night Football game, with over 60,000 spectators witnessing the terrifying event. Thanks to the quick actions of the Bills team trainers and physicians, who treated Damar within 10 seconds of his collapse, as well as the prompt arrival of an ambulance on the field in less than five minutes, Damar’s life was saved. This harrowing experience, witnessed by millions, shed light on the importance of immediate medical intervention in cases of cardiac arrest.

On the other hand, the story of Joshua Pierce, a young man who suffered a cardiac arrest at the age of 14 while playing in a high school football game in Ozark, Arkansas, may not have garnered the same level of attention. However, Joshua’s life was also saved thanks to the heroic actions of bystanders who administered CPR, used an automated external defibrillator (AED), and swiftly transported him to a medical facility for further treatment. Joshua credits these individuals for his survival, stating that without their quick response, he would not be here today.

The American Heart Association, along with cardiac arrest survivors, families affected by cardiac emergencies, and advocates across the country, is advocating for the passage of bipartisan legislation to ensure that students and staff in schools are prepared to handle cardiac emergencies. The House recently passed the Cardiomyopathy Health Education, Awareness, Research, and Training in the Schools (HEARTS) Act, and a similar bill, the Access to AEDs Act, is pending in the Senate. These bills aim to provide federal support for CPR and AED training, as well as the acquisition of AEDs and the development of emergency response plans in schools.

Cardiac arrest is a serious condition that claims the lives of thousands of individuals each year, with survival rates outside of a hospital currently standing at only 10%. By implementing proper training, resources, and emergency plans in schools, these statistics can be significantly improved. Students, especially athletes, are at a higher risk of experiencing cardiac arrest, making it crucial for schools to be equipped to respond effectively to such emergencies.

Several states have already passed legislation requiring schools to develop cardiac emergency response plans, and the Smart Heart Sports Coalition is working to expand these efforts nationwide. Congressional action is needed to ensure that schools have the necessary resources to prevent and respond to cardiac emergencies effectively.

Damar Hamlin and Joshua Pierce are living proof of the importance of immediate intervention in cases of cardiac arrest. Damar has returned to playing NFL football, while Joshua is leading a healthy and fulfilling life. Their stories serve as a powerful reminder of the impact that timely medical care can have on saving lives. It is essential for Congress to prioritize the passage of legislation that will help schools across the country be prepared for cardiac emergencies, ultimately saving lives and ensuring the well-being of students and staff.
