Unusual symptoms can begin to manifest for women as they transition into middle age.

As Andrea LaCroix lay awake at night, she found herself grappling with sudden and rapid heart palpitations. Meanwhile, Claire Gill, who welcomed a baby in her early forties, started to suspect she might be expecting again when her periods began to come and go. Laura Okafor, a busy mother of young children, was puzzled by her newfound insomnia and heightened anxiety. Ultimately, each of these women discovered they were experiencing perimenopause, a transitional phase marked by hormonal fluctuations that can span several years leading up to menopause, defined as a year without menstruation.

In recent years, menopause has captured significant public interest, leading to a surge in literature, entrepreneurial ventures, and support from celebrities including Drew Barrymore, Naomi Watts, and Halle Berry. Recently, even Queen Latifah stepped into the conversation through an advertisement for WeightWatchers. Now, health innovators are turning their attention to perimenopause, often referred to as menopause’s “smaller sibling,” as Okafor aptly puts it. Entrepreneurs are eager to tap into the $18 billion menopause market, launching a variety of products and services targeting women beginning in their late thirties, including community programs, dietary supplements, meal plans, wearables, and prescription options.
