In 1981, Cassandra Peterson delighted audiences with her iconic character, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, on the Los Angeles television show Movie Macabra. Elvira, a blend of Elvis, Vampira, and vaudeville charm, became a gothic icon sporting her signature black attire, voluminous raven beehive, and charmingly dark humor. As the show gained traction nationally, it marked a revolution for all those who relished the eccentricity of the outcast.

Celebrating Individuality

For decades, Elvira has been an advocate for misfits and horror enthusiasts, encouraging everyone to embrace their uniqueness. Just in time for Halloween—or as she aptly reminds us, any day of the year—Elvira has unleashed her latest creation, a book titled Elvira’s Cookbook From Hell (Grand Central Publishing). This ghastly guide serves as the perfect manual for hosting the most unforgettable spooky gatherings imaginable.

A Conversation with Elvira

We had the pleasure of speaking with the mastermind behind the bewitching character. She shared her insights on gothic entertaining, upcoming projects, and her unexpected affinity for graveyards.

Vogue: Why did you decide to create a cookbook?
Cassandra Peterson: I’d actually been contemplating this for about 30 years! As someone who loves cooking and entertaining, I started calling myself the “Martha Stewart of the macabre.” I wanted to craft an entertaining and lifestyle book specifically for the goth community. Although it was a challenging sell to publishers, I’m thrilled that it finally came together. It’s a year-round guide for those who appreciate this lifestyle, not just for Halloween. Crafting the recipes was even tougher than writing my autobiography!

Vogue: You truly are the Martha Stewart of the macabre!
Cassandra Peterson: (Laughs) Yes! When I heard Martha claiming the title “Queen of Halloween,” I thought, “Oh, dear. You’re many things, but not that!” However, I do admire her—her parties are legendary.

Vogue: What are your thoughts on the perception of women in the industry as they age?
Cassandra Peterson: Society can be harsh. I feel I’ve created a bit of a monster with Elvira—being sexy and showing a lot of skin doesn’t always age gracefully.

Vogue: Who are your favorite horror personalities?
Cassandra Peterson: Oh, definitely John Zacherle! And I love Joe Bob Briggs; he’s amusing and quirky. And without Vampira, my journey wouldn’t have been possible.

Iconic Films and Personal Touches

Vogue: What horror films do you cherish?
Cassandra Peterson: I adore classic horror, particularly The Shining, Rosemary’s Baby, and The Exorcist. Nothing can outdo the scares in The Exorcist!

Vogue: With your love for horror, who would be your ideal dinner guests, living or dead?
Cassandra Peterson: Vincent Price, for his charisma and culinary skills. Elvis, too—he transformed my life trajectory. I’d also invite Stan Lee, a brilliant creative mind, and Paul Reubens.

Hosting Tips and Culinary Delights

Cassandra offered some entertaining wisdom:

Vogue: How do you keep the energy up at a party?
Cassandra Peterson: Music is crucial! It astonishes me how many people throw dinner parties without it; it sparks conversations.

Vogue: Any tips for handling boisterous guests?
Cassandra Peterson: Thankfully, I haven’t had to deal with that directly! But I have a trap door—you simply pull the cord!

Within Elvira’s Cookbook From Hell, resides a world of creative recipes fit for any macabre soirée. At its heart, you’ll find the delightful “Devilish Spider Eggs,” an easy and visually stunning dish. Simply boil eggs, crack their shells, and immerse them in purple and black food coloring overnight to create the perfect creepy dish.

Elvira's Guide to Gothic Entertaining

Cassandra Peterson shares that her personal favorite recipe is the Adraka Kozerole from her film, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark. It’s a heartfelt homage to her childhood with one added twist—crunched potato chips and Cheez Whiz, a delicious send-back to her upbringing!

Final Thoughts

Elvira is not just a runway shade of gothic glamour; she embodies a unique platform for celebrating eccentricity and creativity. As she projects her persona into various realms, such as children’s literature with her delightful book, Elvira’s First Book of Monsters, the allure of her character grows each day.

Elvira’s Cookbook From Hell is scheduled for release on September 30, and it promises to be an essential addition to the library of every ghoulish gourmet and Halloween enthusiast.

For all fans of the macabre, it’s time to sharpen your kitchen knives and ready your cauldrons!

This conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity. For more insights on her spooky yet entertaining life, visit Vogue’s feature on Elvira and be sure to check out Elvira’s Cookbook From Hell.
