Mid-Century Modern Canceled After One Season on Hulu
The multi-camera comedy series “Mid-Century Modern” has officially been canceled by Hulu, following its debut season.
Co-creator Max Mutchnick announced the cancellation on Instagram, expressing his gratitude and sadness: “Ten great episodes… Not enough. But we loved making every single one of them. We’re gonna miss our very special show. Thanks to everyone who watched.”
Premiering in March, the show featured a star-studded cast including Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer, Nathan Lee Graham, and Linda Lavin, though Lavin sadly passed away in December 2024, just before the series premiered.
Series Synopsis
The series synopsis describes the show as, “follows three best friends — gay gentlemen of a certain age — who, after an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs where the wealthiest one resides with his mother. As a chosen family, they demonstrate that regardless of how challenging life becomes, there’s always someone around to suggest that a little cosmetic enhancement might lift your spirits.”
Creators and Production
Mutchnick and David Kohan, known for creating the iconic series “Will & Grace,” collaborated on this project, serving as co-creators and executive producers, alongside Ryan Murphy. In addition to starring in the show, Lane and Bomer also took on the role of executive producers, while James Burrows directed all 10 episodes and served as an executive producer. The studio behind this comedic endeavor was 20th Television.
Reception and Viewership
“Mid-Century Modern” had a positive reception from critics, boasting an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite this, it struggled to capture a significant audience. Hulu has not disclosed specific viewership figures for the series, but it notably did not rank in the Nielsen Top 10 streaming charts, which monitor streaming viewership metrics.
