Amid the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the U.S. government’s top disaster relief official, Deanne Criswell, expressed concern over the spread of false claims and conspiracy theories regarding the federal response to the disaster. These claims, largely perpetuated by former President Donald Trump and other Republicans, have been deemed as demoralizing to aid workers and have instilled fear in those in need of recovery assistance.

Criswell emphasized that such misinformation is not only unhelpful but also detrimental to the overall recovery efforts. She denounced the politicization of the situation and stressed the importance of prioritizing assistance to those affected by the hurricane.

Despite the false narratives circulating, FEMA officials reassured the public that adequate resources are available for the Helene response. With recent funding of $20 billion from Congress, including $8 billion allocated for recovery efforts, the agency is well-equipped to address the aftermath of the disaster.

Furthermore, outlandish theories, such as claims of weather manipulation and land seizure, have exacerbated the situation, leading to mistrust and fear among affected communities. Criswell urged for a unified approach in combating such baseless claims and focusing on the essential task of providing aid to those in need.

President Joe Biden reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working collaboratively with local and state leaders, emphasizing a non-partisan approach to disaster relief efforts. Meanwhile, preparations are underway for Hurricane Milton, a Category 1 storm heading towards Florida, as FEMA continues to prioritize response planning and coordination with state authorities.
