Fear is the weapon of choice for Donald Trump and his administration. Instilling anxiety in both citizens and corporations simplifies the process of controlling them—after all, who would resist a wave of threats if it means protecting their own interests?
The real impetus behind Trump and Pete Hegseth summoning generals from around the globe to Virginia appears to be a theatrical effort to project strength. The symbolism here is almost laughable.
During the gathering, Hegseth articulated his concerns to the military officials:
It all begins with physical fitness and an appearance that reflects readiness. If the Secretary of War can handle rigorous physical training, then certainly all members of our armed forces can too. It is indeed disheartening to witness unfit troops in combat formations or anywhere else. Similarly, we cannot accept overweight officers and leaders within the Pentagon or commanding operations globally.
This image is unacceptable. Regardless of rank—whether you’re an airborne ranger or a ‘chairborne’ ranger, a fresh recruit or a four-star general—each of you will adhere to height and weight standards and pass a physical training test. As we know, the official PT test might be absent, but under my direction, henceforth, all members of the joint forces will be obligated to take this test biannually along with meeting height and weight standards, for every year of service.
Equally, I’m instituting a new mandate: every service member is required to engage in physical training every duty day. This is hardly revolutionary; many units already implement this routine. However, we’re formalizing it, and this doesn’t mean just gentler activities like yoga. This is rigorous collective training at all levels—from the Joint Chiefs of Staff to our newest privates.
As leaders, you set the tone. Many of you are already doing this, whether you’re in active duty, guard, or reserve.
Hegseth’s preoccupation with the physical appearance of generals, devoid of any substantial policy or strategic discussion, is telling. The real moment of clarity arrived when Trump took the stage.
