Stephen Colbert Reflects on the Cancellation of “The Late Show”

On a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, host Stephen Colbert opened up about the unexpected news regarding the cancellation of his show, The Late Show. The heart-wrenching conversation revealed not only how he learned of the cancellation but also the emotional process of sharing that news with his team.

How the News Broke

Colbert shared that he received the life-altering news through a lengthy phone call with his manager, James Dixon, who had been aware of the cancellation for a week but held off from telling Colbert while he was on vacation. After relaying the information to his wife, she insisted he inform his staff immediately.

“She said, ‘Are you going to tell the staff?’” Colbert recounted. “I said, ‘I don’t know. Maybe I will tell them after the summer break.’ She said, ‘You are going to tell them tomorrow.’ I said, ‘I don’t think so.’ She said, ‘I am coming to work with you tomorrow because I think you are telling your staff.’”

Telling the Team

Feeling the weight of the news, Colbert managed to first share the information with only his executive producers to protect the rest of the staff during the taping. After they recorded that episode, he gathered his crew and the studio audience, telling them, “Nobody leave. We have one more act of the show.”

“My stage manager said, ‘We are done,’” Colbert said. “I said, ‘No, there is one more act of the show. Please don’t let the audience go.’ He said, ‘No, boss, we are done.’ I said, ‘I am aware of that. I am here to tell you there is one more act of the show.’”

The Emotional Announcement

As he prepared to return to the stage to deliver the tough news, Colbert recalled his intense nervousness, compounded by the absence of a teleprompter. The audience initially chuckled, mistaking the situation for a skit. However, once he revealed the show’s fate, the room fell unexpectedly silent.

“I was so nervous about doing it,” Colbert explained. “There was nothing on the prompter. I messed up twice. I had to restart, and the audience thought it was a bit. They started going, ‘You can do it. Come on, Steve. You can do it.’ I always stumbled on the sentence that told them what was happening. When I finally got to that sentence, they didn’t laugh. They didn’t laugh. That is it. That is how I did it.”

What Comes Next

In July, CBS officially announced that “The Late Show” would be canceled following the next television season, citing financial reasons. Some analysts speculate that the decision was influenced by broader corporate strategies, including the merger between Paramount—the parent company of CBS—and Skydance Media.
