As Amazon gears up for the launch of its much-anticipated “Fallout” Season 2, scheduled for release in December, the creators of the iconic video game series that inspired the Prime Video show have announced exciting plans to integrate Walton Goggins’ character, The Ghoul, alongside other elements from the television adaptation into the ongoing “Fallout 76” video game.

The upcoming downloadable content (DLC) for the game is titled “Burning Springs,” designed by Bethesda Game Studios in collaboration with the creative team behind the Amazon “Fallout” series. Bethesda proudly presents this update as the most extensive addition to “Fallout 76” to date, marking the game’s 64th major DLC offering.

According to Bethesda Softworks’ description, “‘Fallout 76: Burning Springs’ ushers players into a new area through its largest update since 2020. This free update, available to all ‘Fallout 76’ players, allows exploration of a post-nuclear Ohio, introduces new characters and factions, and features all-new Bounty Hunting missions led by Walton Goggins as The Ghoul from the Prime Video series.”

While an official release date for the “Burning Springs” update has not yet been announced, Microsoft confirms that it will launch in December, coinciding with the December 17 premiere of “Fallout” Season 2 on Amazon Prime Video. Fans can look forward to further details during Bethesda’s upcoming “Fallout Day” presentation on October 23.

For those unfamiliar with the game, “Fallout 76” is set the furthest back in the franchise timeline, predating the events of Amazon’s “Fallout” Season 1 and its forthcoming Season 2. Incorporating elements from the show into “Fallout 76” naturally involves The Ghoul, a character deeply rooted in the post-apocalyptic lore. Starting with the Public Test Server on October 2, Goggins’ likeness and voice will enhance the player experience.

Voiced by Goggins himself, The Ghoul will introduce players to bounty hunting in the “Burning Springs” update: “Gamers will get the opportunity to engage with this legendary character, who will oversee bounty missions scattered throughout Burning Springs. Continuous bounties will arrive, encouraging players to frequently check in with The Ghoul for the latest targets and rewards.” Although The Ghoul won’t be a playable character or a companion, players can encounter him at ‘The Last Resort’ in Highway Town, where he will provide a list of wanted individuals to track down.

“The cohesive storytelling between the show and the games is crucial,” noted Bill LaCoste, lead producer on “Fallout 76.” “When developing our narratives and characters, we ensure they reflect the authenticity of the game. Fans of the show who are just starting with the game will find it reassuring that characters and situations align with established lore. The familiarity of the surroundings, like the toasters and cabinets, resonates with the game, enhancing their experience.”

Earlier this year, during an interview with Variety at Summer Game Fest, the “Fallout 76” team hinted at a potential tie-in with the Amazon series—and developers have indicated that more content linking the two might come after “Burning Springs.”

Jon Rush, the creative director at Bethesda Game Studios, shared insights on future expansions, stating, “The creative talent here allows for numerous possibilities in terms of future features or augmenting existing ones, which may incorporate connections to the show, be they subtle or more pronounced.”
