Authorities in Chicago are investigating a brazen theft that involved two Colombian men who allegedly stole a significant amount of money from an ATM attendant’s vehicle on the city’s Northwest Side. Following their arrest, the men were released on electronic monitoring, only to subsequently vanish.
On September 7, a 66-year-old ATM operator parked his vehicle in the 6600 block of North Oliphant in Edison Park to service a nearby cash machine. Upon returning, he discovered that the rear passenger-side window of his car had been smashed and a backpack containing $10,000 in cash had been stolen, as outlined in a recent police report. Surveillance footage captured the incident, showing one man acting as a lookout while the other broke into the vehicle.
Just five days after the theft, law enforcement located the vehicle used in the crime in the 3100 block of West Eddy and initiated surveillance operations. Officers observed 35-year-old Jairo Martinez-Ruiz arrive in a car and drop off 60-year-old Yezid Caicedo Sanchez. Sanchez reportedly entered another vehicle involved in the robbery and attempted to flee when officers attempted a traffic stop due to a false registration. He was apprehended shortly afterward in the 3900 block of North Claremont.
Simultaneously, officers were pursuing Martinez-Ruiz, who fled on foot after abandoning his vehicle. He was taken into custody in the 4000 block of North Western Avenue, found in possession of $1,561 in cash, according to police reports.
Both individuals faced charges of burglary as well as vehicle registration violations. However, due to the nature of the charges, which did not warrant detention, Judge Susana Ortiz allowed their release under electronic monitoring. Unfortunately, neither individual appeared for their scheduled court date on September 22, prompting Judge Anthony Calabrese to issue warrants for their arrest for failure to appear. As of the latest updates, both men remain at large.
