In unveiling her spring collection titled “Reverie,” designer Caroline Hu has aptly chosen a name that reflects her unique sensibility and creative vision. This season, Hu’s designs are rooted in the intriguing realms of optical illusions and what she refers to as “subverted expectations.”

“I believe society imposes invisible rules,” Hu expressed backstage prior to her show. “My goal is to gently challenge these norms.” This approach translated into her playful reimagining of classic pieces; she infused elements like a Victorian corset—crafted from quilted silk—into a standard T-shirt, and ingeniously flipped a shirtdress to position its collar at the hem. Furthermore, in a humorous twist, she repurposed socks to create contrasting pink paneling on a shirred minidress, which sported an asymmetrical hem line.

The real magic of Hu’s collection lay in her sophisticated embroidery techniques. For example, embellishments on a tailored jacket appeared to dissolve seamlessly into the fabric, while a gray organza dress with meticulous pin tucking showcased embroidered pink bows in a trompe l’oeil manner. A sheer column dress with a flounced hem featured tiny floral prints that morphed into pixelated geometric designs—both striking and innovative. One particular highlight was a cropped black jacket that the designer opted to present inside out, revealing its intricate embroidery as a flou motif while concealing its polished exterior beneath the lining.

“My team crafted all these flowers, but they didn’t quite grasp the vision,” Hu shared. “This method resonates more deeply and emotionally with me.” The designer continued to embrace this theme by layering tulle with fabrics adorned with floral prints drawn from her own abstract oil paintings—this artistic style aligns with the spring trend that celebrates blurred motifs and collage-like aesthetics, allowing for personal expression. To further enhance the showcase, Canadian dancer and choreographer Emma Portner contributed a captivating performance.

In the realm of footwear, one powerful trend emerging this spring is the blend of style with comfort. Hu’s latest collaboration with Adidas, the CLOT Taekwondo by Caroline Hu, is a perfect illustration of this concept. With a curated palette of triple black, soft pink, and off-white, these shoes elegantly merge the aesthetics of ballet and martial arts, grounding the collection with both volume and flair.
