Phillip Keefe’s furniture is truly a sight to behold, with pieces that seem to come alive with a sense of movement. Based in Chicago, the designer utilizes traditional techniques such as hand-carving and wood joinery to create furniture that resembles creatures like spiders, crabs, and other creepy crawlers.

The inspiration for Keefe’s unique creations initially came from his dog, Iggy, who often kept him company in the studio. Despite Iggy’s less-than-helpful antics, he inadvertently became a muse for Keefe. The designer even used the dog’s legs as a model for a series of chairs and tables, affectionately named after Iggy.

One of Keefe’s standout collections, the “Arthropod” series, was born out of experimentation with wood joints. By discovering a method that allowed furniture legs to attach to the side of a piece rather than underneath, Keefe created bookshelves, cabinets, and desks with square skeletal frames and legs that give the illusion of being able to move on their own.

For those interested in experiencing Keefe’s anthropomorphic works firsthand, there is a pop-up project featuring his pieces in Chicago until October 11. However, you can also explore more of his creations on his website and Instagram.

Each piece by Phillip Keefe is a work of art, blurring the lines between furniture and sculpture. With intricate details and a whimsical touch, his furniture adds a touch of fantasy and personality to any space. If you’re looking to add a touch of whimsy to your home, Keefe’s imaginative creations are sure to make a statement.
