In an effort to keep pace with the burgeoning global demand for in-camera visual effects, Spain is enhancing its studio infrastructure significantly. A notable initiative is taking place in A Coruña, Galicia’s largest port city in northwest Spain, where cutting-edge developments are set to redefine the audiovisual landscape.
One major advancement comes from Pedralonga Studios, created through a collaboration between the Galician Audiovisual Cluster (CLAG) and A Coruña University. They are unveiling the Coruña Immersive Studio (CEI). This virtual studio is being heralded as the largest in Spain and one of the most sophisticated integrated virtual facilities in Europe, according to a presentation at the Madrid trade fair Iberseries & Platino Industria.
Situated at A Coruña’s Cidade das TIC, CEI features a substantial 750 square meter (8,100 sq. ft.) virtual soundstage. It is outfitted with a semi-circular LED screen measuring 28 meters (92 feet) wide and 6 meters (18 feet) high, delivering stunning 4K resolution at a 1.9 pixel pitch definition.
The technological prowess of CEI lies in its fully integrated setup, employing the Pixotope 1.9 definition software. “It’s tried and tested,” remarked José Manuel Deus, the managing director of Pedralonga Estudios, in an interview with Variety during Iberseries & Platino Industria. He also announced that the studio is slated to officially open on October 8, with confirmed clients for commercial projects, feature films, and television series. The VFX supervision will be helmed by Diego Fernández Avendaño.
Covering a total of 2,000 square meters (21,500 sq. ft.), CEI represents an investment of just under €9 million ($10.5 million), supported by A Coruña county council and CLAG with backing from the Spanish Government via Next Generation European Union Funds.
The operations of CEI will be managed by Pedralonga Estudios, which is developing a larger studio complex of over 5,500 square meters (59,000 sq. ft.), scheduled to open in 2026. This project enjoys the support of ten leading Galician production companies, CLAG, and A Coruña University, with further assistance from the Regional Government of Galicia through IGAPE.
The upcoming Pedralonga Studios facility will comprise two large conventional soundstages, measuring 2,500 square meters (26,900 sq. ft.) and 2,000 square meters (21,500 sq. ft.), making them among the largest available in Spain. Additional space of 1,500 square meters (16,150 sq. ft.) will accommodate offices, dressing and changing rooms, alongside what is referred to as “technical areas.”
During the presentation titled “Innovation and Efficiency: Discover the Future of Content Production,” speakers included Rosa Ana García, county council member for Industry, Business, Environment, Employment, and Demographic Policy at Deputación da Coruña; Miguel Ovejero, Deputy Director General for Audiovisual Communication Services Regulation at SEDIA; José Manuel Deus, and Alfonso Blanco, President of the Galician Audiovisual Cluster (CLAG).
