In summary

  • Gemini for Home is rolling out to older Nest devices, including speakers, cameras, and doorbells.
  • This update is applicable to devices launched over the last ten years.
  • Early access registration is now open.

In a significant move for smart home enthusiasts, Google has shared plans to extend its advanced AI assistant, Gemini for Home, to a plethora of older Nest devices.

The tech giant recently unveiled an innovative Google Home Speaker that is set to be a game-changer in the smart speaker market. The official release for this cutting-edge device is slated for Spring 2026.

However, the good news doesn’t end there, as Google has confirmed that users of older Nest speakers will soon be able to experience the capabilities of Gemini for Home.

“We’re excited to bring Gemini for Home to every speaker, smart display, camera, and doorbell we’ve manufactured over the past decade,” the company stated. Alongside this, a new Google Home app will also be introduced.

Gemini for Home will take over from the existing Google Assistant on numerous established Google devices, including popular products like the Google Nest Hub, Google Nest Mini, as well as security devices such as the Google Nest Cam and the Google Nest Doorbell.

One of the exciting features of Gemini for Home is its ability to provide enhanced feedback, allowing it to not just deliver standard motion alerts, but also identify and describe what’s occurring in the camera’s view.

With Gemini for Home, users can expect a selection of ten uniquely designed, natural-sounding voices for their interactions. The AI assistant is crafted to mimic human conversations effectively, making back-and-forth dialogues feel seamless and intuitive. Additionally, Gemini has the capability to remember prior requests, allowing users to avoid repetitive phrasing in quest of information.

Moreover, the assistant’s understanding of vague or context-rich queries promises to enhance the user experience, particularly when it comes to media requests. For instance, a casual prompt like “Hey Google, play the song from that movie with the oil workers who flew into space to detonate an asteroid,” is one of the practical examples Google stands by—proving Gemini’s advanced comprehension abilities.

As for practical availability, Gemini for Home is set to launch this month via an early access initiative, with compatible speakers and displays following suit towards the end of the month.

To join the early access program, navigate to the Google Home app (ensure it’s updated to version 4.0), select the Settings tab at the bottom, scroll down to the Nest services and support section, and tap Early Access followed by the Sign Up button. From there, simply wait for notification regarding your upcoming Gemini for Home upgrade.
