Alexander Calder is best known for his iconic mobiles, which transformed the way art interacts with the space around it. As a pivotal figure in Modernism, Calder’s innovative approach to “drawing” within a three-dimensional context resulted in both a remarkable art movement and a beloved component of home dĂ©cor. His contributions to art have made him one of the most significant artists of the 20th century, showcasing a profound interest in dynamics and perception.

Today, his legacy is celebrated in a newly established museum located in Philadelphia—the city that shaped his family and where he was born. Nestled along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Calder Gardens features a sprawling 1.8-acre outdoor space and an 18,000-square-foot indoor exhibition area dedicated to a rotating collection of Calder’s masterpieces.

The museum’s design fosters a vibrant dialogue between art, architecture, and nature. Outdoor installations are integrated into a verdant landscape designed by Piet Oudolf, while the renowned architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron has crafted an interior that harmonizes with Calder’s works. Grandeur radiates from the large-scale installations nestled within the airy concrete galleries, while smaller mobiles find their perfect placement in illuminated alcoves.

Calder Gardens welcomes visitors Wednesday through Monday. For more information, visit their website.
