Dr Francis, a renowned climate scientist, has highlighted the significant impact of the Arctic on the global climate system. She emphasized that the cycle of water in the atmosphere is accelerating, leading to more frequent heavy downpours and increasing droughts. This phenomenon is attributed to the rising moisture coming from the Arctic and the heightened evaporation from warming oceans worldwide.

The interconnectedness of these changes is reflected in a recent report by Munich RE, which states that catastrophic events such as flooding, extreme storms, and earthquakes have resulted in overall losses of approximately US$120bn. The report attributes 68% of overall losses and 76% of insured losses to severe thunderstorms, flooding, and forest fires.

Dr Francis underscored the urgency for policymakers to address the escalating impacts of climate change. She emphasized the need to reduce carbon emissions, particularly carbon dioxide and methane, to reverse the warming trend and mitigate the adverse effects on communities worldwide. Dr Francis urged policymakers to act swiftly and decisively, emphasizing the importance of political will in combating climate change.

Despite the upcoming COP29 being hosted by Azerbaijan, a petro-state with limited commitment to emission reductions, Dr Francis remains hopeful for meaningful international action. She cautioned against the controversial concept of geoengineering as a distraction from more effective solutions like transitioning to renewable energy. Dr Francis stressed the importance of research to highlight the risks associated with geoengineering and to educate the public and policymakers on the benefits of renewable energy.

As the author of ‘COPOUT – How governments have failed the people on climate,’ Nick Breeze will be reporting from COP29 for The Ecologist. His work aims to raise awareness of the urgent need for climate action and the potential consequences of inaction. With a focus on scientific evidence and policy implications, Dr Francis and other experts continue to advocate for bold and decisive measures to address the pressing challenges of climate change.
