Two teenage girls tragically lost their lives in an early morning incident on Saturday, allegedly while engaging in the perilous activity known as subway surfing in New York City. Among the victims was a mere 13-year-old.

The grim discovery was made shortly after 3:00 AM at the Marcy Avenue-Broadway station, where authorities found the young girls unresponsive atop a subway train.

This deadly trend, frighteningly common among youths, has already claimed five lives in 2025. The statistics are similarly sobering for previous years: six fatalities in 2024 and five in 2023.

New York Post reported:

Two teenage girls—including a 13-year-old—were killed in a horror that police suspect stemmed from an ill-fated subway surfing stunt on a Brooklyn train, as confirmed by officials on Saturday.

This latest calamity raises the grim tally of subway surfing fatalities this year to five, teetering dangerously close to last year’s six deaths, and matching the toll from 2023.

The authorities suspect the second victim was aged somewhere between 13 and 18. Both were pronounced dead on the scene.

In this latest incident, police responded to a call at 3:10 a.m. to find the girls unconscious on the roof of a Brooklyn-bound J train, according to police sources.

According to the New York Post, officers were observed engaging with three teenage boys inside the station; subsequently, two of them were transported away in a police cruiser.

Witnesses mentioned that the two girls were part of a larger group of nearly 15 teenagers aboard the train prior to the tragic discovery.

Subway surfing, a thrill-seeking activity spurred on by social media platforms, poses severe dangers and raises alarm amongst parents and city officials alike. Videos showcasing this reckless behavior often incite others to imitate similar stunts, each one of which could end in tragedy.

In response, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has taken measures to combat this alarming trend, appealing to parents to be vigilant and involved. Their public service announcement titled “Ride Inside, Stay Alive” aims to spread awareness about the dangers.

Additionally, the NYPD has recently incorporated drone technology to monitor and apprehend individuals daring enough to ride on the exterior of subway cars.
